Port Of Taranto Bulk Material Area Molo Polisettoriale
The project involved the redevelopment of the existing quay, the redevelopment of the apron, the construction of a new stormwater drainage network, and a new treatment plant. During the feasibility study, an environmental characterization of the site was conducted to obtain a full understanding of the soil and groundwater at various depths. Design activities included:
- Raising the apron at the base of the pier, whose floor level is 1 m below the surrounding area;
- Paving the aprons and replacing the road signs;
- Renovation of the utilities networks (electrical, lighting, fire prevention) and installation of an intrusion detection system.
The planned stormwater drainage system consists of a network of pipes that collect and transport water to a pumping station, preceded by a screening channel. The water is channeled into a sump capable of separating the first rainwater (the first 5 mm of rainfall) from the runoff water, which is stored and sent within 48 hours to a dedicated treatment plant (sedimentation, oil separation, and filtration), in compliance with current Regional Regulations.
Further rainfall is stored in a sedimentation tank for the time necessary for solid particles and oil, potentially present in the rainwater runoff, to settle by gravity before being discharged into the sea.
