Port Of Monfalcone Lng Terminal
The primary objective of the project was to deepen the port’s seabed to allow LNG carriers to access the future terminal. The new landfill was confined by a natural rock reef on one side and a caisson quay on the other, which will later be used as a multipurpose terminal. To accelerate the settlement of the reclaimed land, the dredged sediments were stored in the landfill according to dredging techniques (mechanical or suction dredge) and grain size. A system designed to collect and discharge excess water was also installed to accelerate sediment dehydration.
The project included the following interventions:
- Dredging of the seabed to -13.50 m above sea level;
- Construction of a new landfill;
- Construction of a caisson quay;
- Construction of a multipurpose terminal;
- Extension of the existing breakwater.
From an environmental perspective, key issues were the management of mercury-contaminated sediments and the mitigation of impacts on Natura 2000 sites and other nearby protected areas.
