Port of Taranto New Breakwater
The project involved the construction of a new breakwater to protect the Taranto harbor on the west side. The 500-meter-long breakwater consists of natural and artificial boulders, the structure of which adapts to the geotechnical characteristics of the foundation.
Specifically, the breakwater consists of a tout-venant core, a filter layer of natural boulders, and a mantle, consisting of two levels of tetrapods along the outer sides and ends, and natural boulders along the inner side.
From an environmental perspective, preliminary geological and geognostic surveys, an integrative environmental characterization, and a wave climate study were required. DHI software was used to calculate the internal wave climate.
BIM MODELLING
This is the first unconventional maritime works project Made in Italy. This project was developed using BIM: 2D/3D views, elevations, and sections were created.
The use of BIM allowed the team to share the model, allowing for joint management and modification of the work in the event of conflicts or anomalies, which were automatically detected, with resolution for each individual sector. Furthermore, BIM allowed for the definition of construction phases, work progress, construction costs for individual elements, and cash flow forecasting.
